The right standing with God comes through faith in the atoning work of Jesus Christ.

November 23 @ 5:00 pm - November 24 @ 7:00 pm MST

Romans 3:21-25a ESV

But now the righteousness of God has been manifested apart from the law, although the Law and the Prophets bear witness to it— 22 the righteousness of God through faith in Jesus Christ for all who believe. For there is no distinction: 23 for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, 24 and are justified by his grace as a gift, through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus, 25 whom God put forward as a propitiation by his blood, to be received by faith.

Discussion Questions:

  • How would you summarize Romans 1:18 ESV through 3:20?
    • Read vs 20. For by works no man will be justified!

  • What is the importance of Paul’s transition in vs. 20, “But now”?
    • Now, meaning the salvation period inaugurated in the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ.

  • What is the “righteousness of God”? and how has it been manifested apart from the law?
    • The righteousness of God refers to the morally right character of God.
    • It has been established that no man can be saved by trying to adhere to the law, but in God’s mercy, He has provided a way by which man can be in good standing with Him, apart from the law!
    • For all have sinned and fall short of the Glory of God!

  • What does it mean to be justified? What is grace? What does it mean to be redeemed through Jesus Christ?
    • Declared not guilty, but righteous by the divine judge. God, only by grace, (unmerited favor), which is the “gift”.
    • Redemption is the idea of buying back something and involves a cost. God pays the cost, so we are justified freely. This word reaches back to the Exodus of Israel as it left Egypt and the blood of the Passover Lamb, (Ex 12-15 ESV) where the Lord liberated Israel from Egypt.

  • What does the word “propitiation” mean in the context of verse 25a?
    • Jesus’s blood “propitiated” or satisfied God’s wrath, so that His Holiness is not compromised in forgiving sinners.
    • God’s righteous anger needed to be appeased before sin could be forgiven, and God in His love sent His Son (who offered himself willingly), to satisfy God’s anger against sin.
